Following a disciplinary investigation from UEFA in regards to the second leg incidents against Bilbao and CSKA Moscow respectively, Marseille and Lyon run the risk of being sanctioned.
This investigation into two of France’s major clubs follows fan-related commotion during the respective second leg ties between Marseille and Athletic Bilbao at San Mames and Lyon’s match at the Groupama stadium against CSKA Moscow.
Marseille are being charged for the setting off and throwing of fireworks, as well as for crowd disturbances, both of which violate Article 16 (2) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations (DR). They were brought up on the same charges on September 14th following their group stage game against Turkish opponent Konyaspor.
UEFA fined the French club €14,000, who were then forced to play a Europa league game with limited stadium attendance. Seeing as this is a second offence, the club risks a greater punishment, and could be sanctioned for their quarter final match against Leipzig on April 12th at the Velodrome. Their case is set to be reviewed on March 22nd by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body.
Lyon, who are already eliminated, will be dealt with on May 31st. Jean Michel Aulas’ club could face heavy consequences if UEFA deem this to be a repeat offence. Last April, the European footballing body slapped Lyon with a conditional two year suspension following their match against Besiktas, where pitch invasions had occurred. It is important to remember that racist behaviour is subject to the partial closure of the stadium by UEFA at the very least, which leaves Lyon with a reason to worry.
Lyon are being charged with racist behaviour, which violates Article 14 (DR), and the throwing of objects and setting off of fireworks, which break Article 16 (2) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations. (editor’s note: as well as, Crowd disturbances – Art. 16 (2) DR, and Stairways blocked – Article 38 of the UEFA Safety and Security Regulations). RMC report that at least eight police officers were injured, to which Lyon responded with a press release on the matter following their Europa League elimination on their official website.
