The BET Awards may technically be billed an awards show honoring the greatest in black entertainment, but Sunday night’s 16th annual run at L.A.’s Microsoft Theater was one clearly dedicated to one star: the late, great Prince, who died on April 21 at age 57.
From the onset, co-hosts and Black-ish co-stars Tracee Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson let audiences know that the evening would be defined by a celebration of the iconic legend’s lasting legacy.
Rather than paying respects with a single performance, a wide range of talents, including everyone from Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, Janelle Monae, Maxwell and more, had their chance to interpret the prolific artist’s lasting work. What resulted was a truly epic (hello, Sheila E.!) Prince tribute concert honoring all of his greatest hits.
