A new protocol to treat rabid dog bite patients can prove to be a major breakthrough that even the WHO recommends as one of the least expensive therapies in the world, cutting costs by a factor of almost a 100. For a single treatment, the price worldwide was expected to reach just a few dollars.
“It’s a revolutionary treatment that drastically reduces the dose of medicine,” Omesh Kumar Bharti, a field epidemiologist with the Himachal Pradesh government, told IANS. He added, “so is the cost of treatment that would drastically cut to just Rs 350 ($5.50) from the exiting Rs 35,000 ($545) per patient”. The last week’s World Health Organisation (WHO) update on rabies vaccines and immunoglobulins acknowledged the new low-cost treatment protocol established by Bharti, who is working at Intra Dermal Anti-Rabies Clinic and Research Centre of Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital here.
