CHARLOTTE, NC — It’s not a stretch to say this has been a pretty stressful week in the Carolinas, with many residents in the path of the approaching monster storm trying to pray and wish away the technicolor blob of doom hurtling toward them. As Hurricane Florence continues to barrel its way to the Carolina coastline Thursday, a group of concerned storm watchers have come together online with another self-preservation strategy in mind, and they’re equipped with a sense of humor and, quite possibly, firearms kept at the ready to shoot warning shots at the 110-mph storm to make it go away.

“Get your guns and your umbrellas. And your umbrella-guns, and your beer, and your beer-guns, and your tiny umbrellas to keep your beer dry, and join people from all along the East Coast in scaring away Hurricane Florence to protect our country from this foreign invader!,” said the Facebook page announcing the event, “Shooting Guns At Hurricane Florence To Scare It Away.”
But, no, really — don’t do it it, the group said. “You could kill someone and you cannot frighten a hurricane. I can’t believe I actually have to write this.”
What you will find on this site — because you know you’re going to go check it out — is a treasure trove of Hurricane Florence memes. “I urge all my family and friends in the Carolinas and in the entire East Coast to be careful,” said one. “I can’t afford to go to 27 baby showers in April because you lost power…”
“Hurricane Tip #1: If flooding becomes too severe, use a door as a floatation device,” another said. “One door can hold two people… Rose.”
By Thursday morning, the event page had 33,000 listed as going, with nearly 80,000 saying they were interested, proving the draw of a little levity to balance out what for many has been a stressful lead up to the monster storm.
