I attended the WWE Live Show in Chicago at AllState Arena on Wednesday in the VIP section and it was a tremendous show for start to finish.
Of course, I was perhaps a little excited because I got to meet Shinsuke Nakamura, United States Champion Rusev and Lana, and my favorite wrestler Becky Lynch before the show began. I will share my tweets of photos below the results. Here’s what happened.
These are somewhat abbreviated results because I am going off memory after driving home a few hours from the show:
Live Show Opening Segment – Miz TV
The Miz opened with an episode of Must-See Miz TV and he was back to being full heel for this show because he was hosting Chicago’s hometown hero, Mustafa Ali. The Soul of 205 Live and new full-time SmackDown roster drew a huge ovation in the Windy City. For those not familiar with his background, Ali served as a Chicago police officer before chasing his dream of becoming a pro wrestling in the indie scene prior to making it big during the WWE Cruiserweight Classic.
The Miz soon tired of being mercilessly booed by the overwhelmingly pro-Ali crowd. After a few angry words with Ali, Miz soon challenged Ali to a match to determine who would get a WWE Championship opportunity during the show in a steel cage match against champion “The New” Daniel Bryan. This was a big segment because it told the fans that the widely advertised before the show that Bryan would face AJ Styles in the cage match. Styles was not at the show at all.
Miz vs. Mustafa Ali
Winner to face WWE Champ Daniel Bryan
Miz started in control of the match. He landed a few big kicks and used his power advantage to keep Ali grounded. Chicago’s own fought back, using a number of kick strikes and aerial attacks to have Miz reeling. Just when it looked like Ali might come out on top, WWE Champion “The New” Daniel Bryan came running down the ramp and interfered. He hit Ali first and then Miz with running knee strikes to the head to get the referee to ring the bell.
No winner due to DQ
Bryan then alternated pointing at Ali and Miz, calling them losers. Then he pointed all throughout the crowd and yelled that everyone in attendance was a loser, too. He said since they were both losers and everyone in attendance was a loser that there wouldn’t be a WWE Championship match because nobody deserved it. However, Byron Saxton, serving as ring announcer for the night while wearing a pair of festive Christmas socks, announced that the WWE Championship would be a triple-threat steel cage match between Bryan, Ali and Miz.
Six-Man Tag Team Match
Aiden English & The Colons vs. Karl Anderson, Luke Gallows & Shelton Benjamin
The Good Brothers got a huge pop from the crowd as chants of “Too Sweet” fired up all over the packed house. However, the Colons came out first and The Drama King, despite being from Chicago, was booed pretty lustily by the crowd. When people started chanting “Rusev Day,” he came up with a pretty good reply in saying “I came up with that name, so you can thank me for that.” That got even more boos for the singing English.
The match didn’t last too long as Benjamin and Anderson gained the upper hand initially on English. It was pretty funny when Epico was tagged, Anderson tagged in Gallows. Epico then tried to immediately tag Primo, who refused and jumped down off the apron. English also jumped down off the apron when Epico turned to tag him. Gallows looked at them like they were all pretty pathetic. He suckered Epico in and then levied a huge offensive game against him, including a huge Powerbomb and elbow drop. Pretty soon after the Big LG and Anderson double teamed a Colon with the Magic Killer for the victory.
Winners: Karl Anderson, Luke Gallows & Shelton Benjamin
Not long into the celebration, Sanity’s music hit and they said Chicago was infected and so were The Club and Benjamin and they wanted to rid the infection. Just like that, another six-man tag match was set.
Six-Man Tag Team Match
Sanity (Eric Young, Alexander Wolfe & Killian Dane) vs. Karl Anderson, Luke Gallows & Shelton Benjamin
This time, Sanity took charge at the start. Young started off against Anderson and mauled him all over the ring, using clubbing blows to the head and tosses across the ring. Gallows got the crowd fired up, trying to revive Anderson with “Too Sweet” chants. Wolfe tagged in and continued the assault for a while, but couldn’t maintain the momentum.
Anderson fought his way to making the hot tag to the Big LG and Gallows put the hammer down on Wolfe. As Gallows was pounding on the German inside the ring, Benjamin ran interference on the outside of the ring, taking out Dain, who is even hairier in person than on TV. Anderson also took out Young, before joining Gallows to put away Wolfe.
Winners: Karl Anderson, Luke Gallows & Shelton Benjamin
The Good Brothers continued to get a huge ovation from the crowd in celebration of the victories. Many people were flashing the Too Sweet signs. Gallows made sure Benjamin took a ring post to climb as they all three got on the second rope and raised their hands in victory for the crowd, but Benjamin looked like he knew all the cheering was for Gallows and Anderson and looked like he was telling them so.
SmackDown Tag Team Championship Triple Threat
The Bar vs. New Day vs. The Usos
The New Day came out first and as Big E gyrated his hips on my side of the ring, Kofi was flipping no-look pancake tosses into the crowd, getting one all the way to the upper deck, and Xavier Woods was playing his trombone. The Usos came out next and were over big time in Chicago. Shouts of “Uss-sso” fired up all over the arena as The New Day actually danced around in the ring to The Usos entrance music like The Usos. Sheamus and Cesaro came out next and had the least amount of reaction by far.
Big E and Jey Uso started out and fairly soon into the matchup Big E got control of Uso in his side stretch move and instead of beating on Uso’s ribs like they do on TV he started spanking his butt repeatedly. Uso got mad and started landing some shoulder tackles, one that made Big E wave his arms and bend backward like he was going to fall down. But Big E held it with his arms waving around for a long time before finally just finishing bent over like Keanu Reeves in the Matrix without falling down.
The action would seesaw back and forth after that until the finishing sequence. The Usos had taken control after superkicking everyone out of the ring. Just as Jey was going to try to hit a suicide dive, Sheamus charged into the ring from out of nowhere, caught Jey as he was about to jump over the ropes and rolled him up for the three count to retain the belts.
Winners: The Bar retains the SmackDown Tag Titles
Mixed Tag Team Match
Andrade “Cien” Almas & Zelina Vega vs. R-Truth & Carmella
The crowd was overwhelmingly behind Truth and Mella, shouting “What’s Up” through the entire match. Truth gained control early, but found himself faced with Tranquilo when he whipped Almas into the ropes. Almas answered a lot of the “What’s Up” chants with “Shut up.” The heels took control when Vega tagged in. She ragdolled Carmella all over the ring and really dominated the offense when the two worked together. She climbed on top of Mella and repeatedly threw hands at The Staten Island Princess, who was able to fight her way to make a hot tag to Truth. They eventually both cleared out the ring to due a brief “Dance Break.” In the finishing sequence, Truth was able to land a flurry of moves against Almas to get the victory.
Winners: R-Truth & Carmella
After the match, R-Truth & Carmella picked a young boy and two girls out of the crowd to get to a “Dance Break” with them. All of the kids were thrilled.
Rey Mysterio vs. Randy Orton
In easily the shortest match of the night, Mysterio got the better of Orton. It couldn’t have lasted much longer than 5 minutes and most of the time Orton was joking around about Mysterio’s size, pretending like he was going to wrestle him from his knees. Orton got in a few punches, but Mysterio landed a huge superkick which sent Orton’s gum flying from his mouth into the crowd. After that, Mysterio hit the 619 and then hit a top rope splash for the quick 1-2-3.
Winner: Rey Mysterio
United States Championship
Rusev vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
This was a lot of fun. Nakamura played his usual head games early, putting his head in Rusev’s chest and playfully swatting and kicking at Rusev throughout the match. It went back and forth for quite a while. Just when it looked like Shinsuke had the Kinshasa set up, Rusev stepped out of the way and eventually put him away with a Matchka Kick.
Winner: Rusev retains the US Championship
WWE Championship Triple Threat Steel Cage Match
“The New” Daniel Bryan vs. Miz vs. Mustafa Ali
This was a tremendous match with all three guys at the top of their game. Everybody got a chance to shine with opening up some offense on the other two at one point. Again, the overwhelmingly pro-Ali crowd roared several times when it was teased that he could make it over the fence or through the door. His biggest highlight is hitting a top rope leaping splash on Miz and Bryan while they were stacked on top of each other.
Bryan and Miz teamed up at one point with each other in delivering what was formerly known as “Yes!” kicks and “Miz” kicks to ground Ali. It looked like Ali was going to put away The Miz for a pin at the end, combining a super kick with another top rope splash. However, Bryan pulled Ali away from Miz, hit a knee strike to ground Ali and then swooped in to cover Miz to retain the title.
Winner: “The New” Daniel Bryan retains the WWE Championship
Ali was last to leave the ring and received a curtain call of sorts as fans continued to rain “Ali” chants down from the rafters. It had to have been a special show for Ali. We had a short intermission at this point before the rest of the show. When we returned…
Women’s Tag Match
Mandy Rose & Sonya Deville vs. Naomi & Lana
Special Guest Ring Announcers: The IIconics Peyton Royce & Billie Kay
The IIconics continued to play up the flirtation angle between Mandy Rose and Jimmy Uso, annoucing her as Jimmy’s favorite wrestler to start the match. Then, they said if you have a problem with Mandy, take it up with her muscle, Sonya Deville. Then, they gave lackluster announcements of the babyfaces.
This one went as you might expect. Rose and Deville used their superior power and strength to gain the advantage of Lana, who did land a few impressive shots, but couldn’t overcome the grappling power of Rose and Deville. Eventually, she made a hot tag to Naomi who was able to hit a Rear View to get the pin on Rose.
Winners: Naomi & Lana
Jeff Hardy vs. Samoa Joe
If there’s any doubt to Hardy’s appeal, let the screaming children behind me who repeatedly kicked the back of my seat and nearly made me go deaf serve as a reminder that the kiddos love them some Extreme.
The Samoan Submission Machine played dirty, as you would expect, and ambushed Hardy during his entrance while he was on a turnbuckle gesturing to the crowd. Joe landed some huge shots, repeatedly picking Jeff up with one arm and using a modified choke slam maneuver to plant him in the canvas.
However, much to the delight of the screaming children, Hardy made his late comeback and charged to victory with a Twist of Fate and top rope Swanton.
Winner: Jeff Hardy

Women’s SmackDown Championship Triple Threat
Asuka vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Becky Lynch
Charlotte came out first to a nice ovation and plenty of “Woos.” But the place absolutely erupted when “The Man” Becky Lynch was announced second. “Becky” chants echoed throughout the arena all the way into Asuka’s ring entrance music. The champion had by far the least reaction of the three. Saxton announced all three of them in the ring again. Once again, the place went bonkers for Becky Lynch, chanting “Becky” for several minutes and making you almost feel sorry for Asuka afterward who had a shell of The Man’s reception. Becky acknowledged the fans and pointed at Charlotte as if to say “See, they love me more than you.” Again, the only noise that held a candle to Becky’s ovation was that for Mustafa Ali in his hometown.
This match was incredible. All three women took turns with brilliant displays of offense. Asuka surged ahead early, nailing Charlotte and Becky with a variety of kicks and backfists. Lynch rallied, clearing Charlotte from the ring and hitting Asuka with a Becksploder. But Charlotte rebounded, clobbering Lynch out of the ring with a spear that Asuka stepped out of the way to avoid and trading knife-edged chops to Asuka’s chest with return fire from Asuka. Lynch must have hit funny when she went out of the ring because one of her elbows was slightly bloodied when she was able to climb back to the ring. It didn’t slow her down as the three-way mayhem continued. Just when it looked like Becky would get Asuka to tap out in the Dis-Arm-Her, Charlotte climbed back in the ring and cleared Becky. The finishing sequence saw just Charlotte and Asuka in the ring. After some back and forth, Asuka got Charlotte to tap in the Asuka Lock. Interestingly enough, they protected Becky yet again from losing a match. And that was the end to a great show.
Winner: Asuka retains by Submission
