Trio of Mavericks Claim Titles at Luther College Open

Decorah, Iowa – Minnesota State recorded three individual champions and four runner-ups at the Luther College Open Saturday. Alphonso Vruno (133 lbs), Drew Lexvold (141) and Aaron Norgren (184 lbs) all won their individual weight classes at the open tournament.

Freshman Alphonso Vruno went 4-0 on the day, including two major decision victories and a pin of Louis Mazzetta (Luther College) at 1:44. One of Vruno’s major decision victories came in the championship bout, as he defeated Marcus Lubner (Concorida-Wisconsin) 14-6.

After receiving a first-round bye, sophomore Drew Lexvold recorded consecutive pins of Ray Feliz-Taveras (Cornell College) and Matt Paulus (Upper Iowa) before defeating Thomas Mirocha (Wartburg) in a 3-2 decision to claim the title.

After winning his first match by an 8-4 decision over Eric Twohey (Wisconsin-La Crosse), senior Aaron Norgren defeated Seth Kilkelly (Concorida-Wisconsin) in a 13-1 major decision win. Norgren went on to defeated Noah Minikus and Mitch Schultz, both from Upper Iowa in 11-6 and 3-2 decisions respectively.

Junior David Demo (125 lbs) sophomore Cody Quinn (165 lbs), senior Brendan Eichmann (174 lbs) and junior Corby Running (285 lbs) all earned second-place finishes at the open. Demo, Quinn and Eichmann all went 3-1 on the day, while Running went 2-1 after receiving a first-round bye.

Thomas Allen (149 lbs), Sawyer Hoffman (157 lbs) and Nathan Haynes (197 lbs) each finished in fifth for MSU.

Alex Folk (157 lbs), Brandon Pederson (174 lbs) and CJ Hays (197) were also in competition today.

Luther College Open Results

MSU will wrestle next Saturday in the Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open hosted by Augsburg College.
