Augustana picked to finish fourth by NSIC coaches

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – Augustana wrestling was picked to finish fourth in the 2012-13 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Pre-Season Coaches’ Poll the league announced on Friday afternoon.

Augustana earned 25 points in the poll while Upper Iowa was picked to win the league earning 64 points. St. Cloud State was picked second (51) followed by Minnesota State (43), Augustana (25) and MSU Moorhead who rounded out the top five with 18 points.

The University of Mary and Northern State were picked sixth followed by Southwest Minnesota State and Minot State.

The points in the rankings were assigned from the top five individuals in each of the ten weight classes using the following system: first= 10, second= 7, third= 4, fourth= 2, fifth= 1.

Individually, Nate Herda was ranked first at 149 pounds in the NSIC. Jayd Docken starts the season ranked second in the league at 197 pounds.

TJ North (125), Jeremiah Peterson (133) and Sean Derry (184) are all ranked fourth at their respective weight classes.

Tom Davies (174) and Brian Schultz (285) open the season ranked fifth while Bradyn Neises is ranked sixth at 165 pounds. Garret Heiberger (157) checked in at seventh, Zach Friederich (141) is eighth.

Augustana opens the season ranked 16th in the country in the first Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Poll of the season. In the individual national rankings, Herda was ranked fourth nationally at 149 pounds. Herda finished 23-8 last season, winning the Super Region 3 title and was a first-team All-NSIC selection.

Docken was the other Viking to crack the top eight in the individual rankings coming in at fourth at 197 pounds. Docken went 20-8 last season at 184 pounds.

Augustana finished 13-3 last season, including 5-2 in the NSIC, which was good for a third-place finish in the final league standings. Augustana went on to finish 10th at the national tournament and qualified seven wrestlers for nationals, three earning All-America honors.
