Free activities for youth ages 11-17. Open Monday to Friday 3-8pm. Hours will vary during the summer according to the planned activities.
Youth are referred to our Outreach Program from Alberta Mental Health and Addictions Staff. Youth are assigned an outreach resiliency worker. Youth and worker meet once a week for 3 hours and work on goals outlineD by the Mental Health and Addictions worker, youth and parent/guardian. The program is 3 months long with the possibility of extension.
Youth are educated on signs of sexual exploitation, healthy vs. unhealthy relationships, how to stay safe/making the right choices and where to go for help.
Youth are educated on how to stay safe while online.


Medicine Hat Youth Action Society (MHYAS) is a registered non-for profit organization located in the heart of downtown. We are an all-inclusive youth wellness centre that has been open for the past 20 years. All youth ages 11-17 are welcome to attend. We are a safe environment for youth in our community that has a zero tolerance towards bullying and drugs/alcohol. At Medicine Hat Youth Action Society, we give the youth the opportunity to find social support, build self-esteem, gain social skills, and learn to build resiliency all while participating in social-recreational activities. We are also actively involved in several community based activities and events. All our activities are FREE for youth.


Wellness Coordinator

Melissa was born in Nova Scotia and moved to Medicine Hat in 1995. She graduated from the University of Alberta in 2008 with her Bachelor of Education degree. After receiving her degree, she taught for 6 years and then decided to switch career paths. Melissa began working for MHYAS in 2014. At first Melissa began working as a success coach for MHYAS in various schools in Medicine Hat and became an Outreach Resiliency Worker at the centre. For the last year and a half Melissa has been the Wellness Coordinator. Melissa has always been passionate about working with youth. Melissa loves to travel and is always planning her next big trip. She also loves animals and anyone who knows her knows her love for her fur baby Rex. Melissa is also a huge Toronto Blue Jays fan.


Resiliency Outreach Worker

Tamara was born and raised in Medicine Hat. She will graduate from the Medicine Hat College in June with a diploma in Social Work. Throughout volunteer and practicum experience, Tamara has worked in a variety of settings in the community. Tamara has a special interest in neurodevelopment and youth resiliency. Tamara enjoys learning new things, being in nature, and spending time with her 12 year old son and their 14 cats.


Resiliency Outreach Facilitator

Luc was born in Saskatoon and moved to New York when he was 20. Lucas attended college while he was there and majored in Psychology and Forensic Sciences while minoring in Philosophy and Business. Lucas moved back to Canada in October of 2016 and moved to Medicine Hat to be closer to family. Lucas enjoys being active and playing sports both indoor and outdoor though his love for basketball and Kobe Bryant topples all.


Youth Centre Staff

Jeff grew up in Pickering, Ontario and has been working with youth for over 20 years. His first youth position that he was hired for was teaching break dancing for the City of Pickering back in 1998. Since then he has had the opportunity to travel the world doing what he loves and going to countries such as Korea, Australia, Norway, and the UK to name a few. Jeff and his family have just moved from the Toronto area to Medicine Hat to be closer to family. Some of Jeff's interests are break dancing, graffiti, and just hanging out with his kids. He is also known for having lots of not so funny clean dad jokes.


Resiliency Outreach Worker

Celyn was born and raised in Medicine Hat. She graduated from Medicine Hat College in 2016 with a diploma in Early Learning and Child Care. She was raised and adopted by her grandparents at a young age, sparking an interest to work with children and youth. Outside of work, Celyn enjoys spending time with her family and friends.
