Reds bolster prop stocks with Ravai signing

The Queensland Reds have strengthened their front-row depth, signing Fijian International Peni Ravai on a one-year deal. The 32-year-old makes the move from French club Clermont, having played 38 games for Fiji since his debut in 2013.“I’m excited to have signed with the Reds," he said in a statement.“It’s a great squad at the club and there’s plenty of competition for spots in the front row.“I’m looking forward to bringing my experience to the team in my first season of Super Rugby.”His signing comes with Taniela Tupou (Achilles) and Harry Hoopert (knee) suffering long-term injuries whilst playing for the Wallabies and Australia A respectively.Ravai represented Fiji in the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups, along with playing for the Sevens side in 2013.The move delighted Reds General Manager of Professional Rugby Sam Cordingley, with Ravai able to cover both sides of the scrum."Peni brings international experience and versatility which is a great combination given we’ve had two season-ending injuries to our front row during the international season," he added. It comes after the club signed pathways prop Phransis Sula-Siaosi in November after impressing during the inaugural Queensland Rugby Challenger Series and tour of Japan. The Reds will open their season with trials against the Western Force (February 4) and the NSW Waratahs (February 11) before facing the Hurricanes on February 25 in the opening round of Super Rugby Pacific.
