Jonathan Clauss says he has been in contact with Atlético Madrid

In an interview published in Le Parisien, Lens right-back Jonathan Clauss has revealed that he has been in contact with Atlético Madrid over a potential transfer to the La Liga side.

The French international has one year left on his contract with the Sang et Or, and is not short on potential suitors after an impressive season in which he scored 5 and assisted 11 goals in 37 appearances.

“It’s a key moment in my career. I want to take into account as many things as possible. I don’t want to leave for the sake of leaving. If it’s the right moment, I’ll have to do it. I’ve spoken with my parents and my girlfriend, I don’t want to make the wrong choice. I’m not letting it get to my head. I feel like everyone around me understands it. Everyone is giving their opinion. We’re discussing it to move things forward, not for them to say: If I were you I would do this.”

“I’ve been in contact [with Atlético Madrid]. But not to the point of making my decision. There’s no document on the table, these are ongoing discussions. They day that something important comes up, we’ll meet around the table with Lens, and if it has to be with Atlético, we’ll take the time to talk. I’m very calm regarding this.”

The 29-year-old returned to French football in 2020 after a spell in Germany at Arminia Bielefeld, and has become one of the most impressive late bloomers in the last few years, with his impressive Lens performances leading to a much-deserved place in Didier Deschamps’ France squad.
