Argentina: Strong look to Pumas side as they target England scalp

Argentina have rolled out their big guns as they look to claim the scalp of England in their Autumn Nations Series opener at Twickenham on Sunday.

Captained by the outstanding Julián Montoya at hooker, the XV includes Pablo Matera, Emiliano Boffelli and several other players who will threaten the English.

Montoya skippers the line-up in a front-row alongside props Thomas Gallo and Francisco Gómez Kodela, an area the Pumas will be eager to gain a key advantage.

Strong side named by Pumas

Behind them comes the experienced second-row pairing of Matías Alemanno and Tomás Lavanini, with the latter lock having improved his discipline recently.

Argentina’s back-row is brimming with talent as number eight Matera is flanked by the powerful Marcos Kremer and hugely talented Juan Martín González.

The backline features Gonzalo Bertranou at scrum-half and Santiago Carreras at number 10, a place he has made his own under the tutelage of Michael Cheika.

There’s experience aplenty in the midfield as Jeronimo de la Fuente is joined by Matias Moroni, with Matías Orlando a solid back-up option late in the match.

Finally, the back three includes Edinburgh star Boffelli and Newcastle’s Mateo Carreras alongside full-back Juan Cruz Mallia, completing an excellent line-up.

Orlando is joined on the bench by Ignacio Ruiz (hooker), Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro, Eduardo Bello (both props), Lucas Paulos (lock), Facundo Isa (back-row), Tomás Albornoz (fly-half) and the uncapped Eliseo Morales (scrum-half) for this weekend’s meeting.

Cheika juggling two jobs

Argentina head coach Cheika has been juggling two jobs over recent weeks as he combines this role with coaching Lebanon in the Rugby League World Cup.

The Pumas are looking for their first win over England at Twickenham since November, 2006 when they came out on top 25-18, but enter full of confidence after overcoming both Australia and New Zealand in this year’s Rugby Championship campaign.
