Here’s Why Steve Madden Just Called Out Nicki Minaj on Twitter

What do Steve Madden, controversial maker of your favorite clubbing heels, and Cardi B, outspoken rapper and delightful social media personality, have in common? Answer: They’ve both got beef with Nicki Minaj.

Chances are you’ve heard about the feud between Minaj and Cardi, which all began with a fateful hurl of a shoe (though, not a Steve Madden one) during a New York Fashion Week party last September. According to reports, Cardi lobbed the stiletto at Minaj after she questioned Cardi’s mothering skills.

Here, a breakdown of how Steve Madden entered the line of fire between the feuding rappers.

Start from the beginning.

It all comes back to the Cardi and Nicki beef, which has been raging for two months. Yesterday, Cardi said that she turned down a Diesel deal, which eventually went to Nicki — basically insinuating that Minaj got her sloppy seconds. “That Diesel deal that you got?” Cardi B asked in an Instagram story. “Yeah, that came to me first. And I had to decline it because I’m already working with fashion brands.” Cardi currently has a deal with beloved millennial label Fashion Nova.

What did Nicki say?

The “Chun-Li” rapper turned around to say she turned down a Steve Madden deal in 2017 that eventually went to Cardi.

So, this is basically a battle of egos?

What did Steve Madden say?

Following the back-and-forth, the brand took to Twitter to call out Minaj for “lying” about being offered a contract. “You can’t turn down an offer that was never made,” the shoe company tweeted. PUNCHES. THROWN.

How did people react?

Basically like this:

Nicki’s response?

On Tuesday evening, Minaj retweeted reporter Adelle Platon, who interviewed Steve Madden in 2015 for Vibe. According to Platon’s interview, Madden had initially approached Minaj about a collaboration, but the two “got into a fight the first minute we met.” Madden eventually reached out to another female rapper, Iggy Azalea, for a collaboration, but told Platon that he wished it had been Nicki instead.

“It was a mistake,” he said of his deal. “I wish I could go back in time and work with Nicki instead of Iggy.” Minaj, of course, added her own two cents to the tweet:

What’s the deal with Nicki and Cardi?

As of Monday night, the two rap queens called a truce. But that was before Steve Madden weighed in.

Is this all a publicity stunt?

Is it a coincidence that Nicki — who has previously strategically feuded with Travis Scott, Kylie Jenner, and the couple’s 8-month-old baby, Stormi — decided to escalate the drama on the same day she dropped her new music video? Who can say!?!
