Moyes will have something to prove should he return to West Ham – Green

West Ham’s sacking of Manuel Pellegrini has led to speculation that former Hammers boss David Moyes is one of the favourites to become the club’s next manager.

Ex-West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green has commented on the possible appointment, and believes the Scotsman will feel he has something to prove after managing the club on a short-term basis back in 2018.

Moyes has been out of work since and could return with a vengeance, according to Green.

“It would be an interesting choice to bring David Moyes back – a bit like Nigel Pearson [at Watford] – he has something to prove,” Green told BBC 5 Live

“He has had a number of positions where it didn’t go so well. He might come into it with a newfound resolution or a new lease of life.

“Maybe it will be a short-term appointment to the end of the season where if he does keep them up you say: ‘Here’s a big bonus and see you later’.”

Despite having ambitions of reaching the European places, West Ham are currently one point above the relegation zone, and a 2-1 defeat at home to Leicester City was to be Pellegrini’s last game.

The club do have a game in hand after their game with Liverpool was postponed due to the Champions League winners’ participation in the Club World Cup, but the Hammers hierarchy decided to make a decision sooner rather than later.

“It is with great disappointment that we’ve had to make this decision,” said joint-chairman David Sullivan.

“It has become clear that a change is required to get the club back on track in line with our ambitions this season.

“We felt it was necessary to act now in order to give the new manager as much time as possible to try and achieve that goal.”

Clubs rarely make such decisions without having an alternative lined up and Green thinks some big names would be interested in managing the club.

“I am sure if you say to the West Ham fans we need someone to see us through to keep us in the division, it’s a tough call,” he added.

“There are big names out there. Unai Emery is a shout, Rafa Benitez has said he is not coming back from China. There are managers who would love to manage West Ham.”
