Driver In Semi Truck Leads Police On Chase Across Missouri

KANSAS CITY, MO — The Missouri State Highway Patrol says it pursued a semi-truck more than 100 miles down Interstate 70 Saturday night after the driver committed an assault in Kansas City.

The chase started with the Kansas City Police Department shortly before 9 p.m. and was soon joined by two Missouri state troopers. The truck sped through spike strips at speeds up to 73 miles-per-hour, authorities said, as a police helicopter kept track of the truck from the sky and ground vehicles fell back.

Photos taken from the police helicopter show flame trailing from the truck after its tires were destroyed by the spike strips.

The truck was eventually disabled near the 106.6-mile marker outside Booneville, Missouri. The driver fled on foot, but the helicopter tracked the suspect from the air and directed troopers on the ground to his or her location. The driver was taken into custody after being stopped by a barbed-wire fence around 10:36 p.m., more than an hour and a half since the pursuit started.

The driver was turned over to police in Kansas City. Authorities say in addition to the assault, a baggie of methampetamine was found in the truck, which had been reported stolen from Oak Grove, Missouri, just outside Kansas City.

The driver’s name has not been released and it’s not yet clear if he or she has been charged. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
