Boy, 2, Dies After Wind Gust Overturns Bounce Pad And Traps Him

LINCOLN, NE — A toddler injured after a strong wind gust overturned a bounce pad he was playing on has died, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.

The boy, Caleb Acuna, 2, was playing with his 5-year-old sister Wednesday night at a pumpkin patch in Lincoln when the wind gust overturned the bounce pad. The sheriff’s office said Acuna was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon and taken off the respirator Friday morning.

According to the sheriff’s office, the 5-year-old sister was thrown off the bounce pad but Caleb Acuna remained on the pad as it tumbled and sustained a critical head injury. Raymond Fire Safety Officer Nick Monnier told The Lincoln Journal Star that the bounce pillow wrapped around Caleb Acuna “like a taco shell.”

The Lancaster County Attorney has ordered an autopsy and the investigation is ongoing.

According to Star, the owner of the pumpkin patch, Josh Kadavy, posted a message to Facebook offering his sympathy to the family.

“Our thoughts, prayers & deepest condolences & sympathies are with the family at this time,” Kadavy wrote. “It’s been an extremely emotional situation for me and my family as well as the family of the little boy. We are continuing to lift the family up in prayer.”

A GoFundMe account set up for Caleb Acuna’s memorial has raised over $16,000.

The Star reported that the family is from Colombia, South America and the father, Edward Acuna, studies and teaches at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
