Mavericks Win Two Out of Three at the Desert Duals

Las Vegas, NV. — Minnesota State wrestling won two out of three duals in Las Vegas on Monday at the Desert Duals.

The Mavericks lost their first dual to CSU-Pueblo 31-11 but rebounded to defeat Simon Fraser 41-6 and Colorado Mesa 24-13.

Minnesota State struggled early in the day against CSU-Pueblo, winning just three out of ten matches to fall 31-11. CSU-Pueblo won the first three matches until Kyle Rathman put the Mavericks on the board with a 10-7 decision in the 149-pound weight class. Shortly after, Logan Saltou and Zach Johnston cut the ThunderWolves’ lead to ten with major decisions of 18-4 and 14-5 at 165 and 174 pounds. The ThunderWolves then closed out the dual with three straight wins to halt the Mavericks comeback hopes.

The Mavericks responded in a big way to rout Simon Fraser University 41-6, winning nine of ten matches in their second dual. Lucas Hagel got the Mavericks off to a hot start by winning his match on a 12-3 major decision at 125 pounds. George Farmah extended the Mavericks lead by a tech fall over Riley Prough in Farmah’s first action of the year. Following victories by Kolbe O’Brien and Daniel Close, Seth Elwood pinned his opponent just 17 seconds into the match. Zach Johnston (174 lbs.) and Dylan Butts (197 lbs.) added on decision wins while Trevor Turriff (184 lbs.) recorded a tech fall to push Simon Fraser out of reach. Fifth ranked Ciaran Ball finally got Simon Fraser in the point column with a fall over Max Villnow in the 285-pound weight class to finish up the dual.

Minnesota State’s final dual of the day came against a tough Colorado Mesa team. Lucas Hagel dropped an early 13-9 decision loss to open the competition. George Farmah responded to get Minnesota State back on track with an 18-3 tech fall at 133 pounds. Kolbe O’Brien battled to a convincing 13-7 decision while Kyle Rathman dominated to a 13-1 major decision to put Minnesota State up 12-3. Colorado Mesa then got one back with #7 Payton Tawater’s 5-2 decision win against Daniel Close to keep them within six points.

Seth Elwood proved why he is the #5 DII wrestler at 165 pounds by defeating tenth ranked Jason Buhr on a 9-6 decision. Zach Johnston, ranked fourth in the nation, followed that up with a 16-5 major decision to finish the day undefeated at 3-0 and put Minnesota State up 19-6.

Colorado Mesa responded by winning two more over Turriff and Butts to keep it within four points heading into the final match. Max Villnow rose to the challenge by pinning Hunter Mooring in 5:14 to win the 285-pound match and seal the team victory. #6 Minnesota State knocked off #25 Colorado Mesa 24-13, winning six of ten matches.

The Mavericks will enjoy a break, and be back to face Minot State on Saturday, January 5th in Mankato Minn.
