NDSU Places Five on Academic All-Big 12 Wrestling Team

IRVING, Texas — North Dakota State University placed five student-athletes on the 2016 Academic All-Big 12 Wrestling team released Thursday, March 3, by the conference office.

Thirty-eight members comprise the first team, including North Dakota State 149-pound redshirt sophomore Clay Ream (Wentzville, Mo.) and Utah Valley’s Jarod Maynes, who were nominated with 4.0 grade point averages, while 19 selections make up the second team.

Joining Ream on the Academic All-Big 12 Wrestling first team are 149-pound redshirt sophomore Mitch Friedman (Oconto Falls, Wis.), 157-pound redshirt sophomore Kyle Gliva (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and 184-pound senior Hayden Zillmer (Crosby, Minn.). NDSU 174-pound redshirt freshman Tyler McNutt (Saint Joseph, Mo.) was on the second team.

Gliva, Ream and Zillmer will wrestle at the Big 12 Championships on March 5-6 at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo.

The Academic All-Big 12 Wrestling team features 15 student-athletes from Conference member institutions Iowa State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and West Virginia, while student-athletes from the league’s affiliate members in the sport — Air Force, Northern Colorado, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming — total 42 selections

First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
