Dragon Wrestlers Dominate Mary on Senior Day
MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team recorded four pins and a win by technical fall on its way to a dominating 42-3 win over Mary in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday in Moorhead, Minn.
MSUM improved to 7-9 overall and 4-4 in the NSIC with the win; the Dragons wrapped up a top-five finish in the league with the win. Mary fell to 2-8 overall and 1-6 in the league.
It was also Senior Day for MSUM, and four Dragons were wrestling their final home matches of their career: Connor MacGregor (141), Conner Monk (174), Matt Lewellen (184) and Gerad Fugleberg (285). All four earned wins, with Monk and Fugleberg both winning by fall.
Also earning pins for the Dragons were sophomore Mario Tuccitto (149) and freshman Blake Bosch (125).
“It was a great way for the seniors to end their careers at home. All of the seniors got wins,” MSUM head coach Kris Nelson said. “They wrestled aggressive. The whole team wrestled aggressive. I thought we wrestled really smart.”
The dual started at 141 pounds, where MacGregor got the Dragons off on the right foot. The Roseau, Minn., native got a takedown in the first period to take a 2-0 lead, and the score stayed that way until the third period. MacGregor built the lead to 3-0 and added another takedown in the final period to make the score 5-0, giving MSUM an early 3-0 lead.
Tuccitto was dominant at 149 pounds for MSUM, pinning Jared Keller in just 2:47 to push the MSUM advantage to 9-0. Tuccitto is now 4-8 on the year. The Dragons’ lead grew to 12-0 when redshirt freshman Dan Murakami edged Mary’s Brandon DeLao, 2-1 at 157 pounds.
Mary won by an 11-4 decision at 165 pounds to cut the Dragon lead to 12-3. It was the Marauders’ lone win of the night.
MSUM quickly regained the momentum back at 174 as Monk, who is graduating this spring and was wrestling in the final home match of his Dragon career, dominated Mary’s John Devito, recording a pair of near falls to build a big lead before finishing the pin in 4:48, pushing MSUM’s lead to 18-3. Monk is now 11-10 on the year.
Lewellen was solid in recording a 7-1 decision win over Tom Devito. The score was tied 0-0 heading into the final period before Lewellen seized control and earned the 7-1 victory, keyed by a three-point near fall. Lewellen now has a career-best 24 wins on the season and his win pushed the Dragon lead to 21-3.
Freshman Tyler Schlosser also gave MSUM some bonus points with a 10-0 major decision win over Riley Nagel at 197 as MSUM’s lead grew to an insurmountable 25-3. It was Schlosser’s 12th win of 2013-14.
The Dragons finished strong, starting with a dominating win by Fugleberg at 285, where he pinned Jonah Westbury in just 1:30 to push the lead to 31-3. Fugleberg, who missed time early in the year with an injury, is now 8-8 on the year.
Freshman Blake Bosch was equally impressive, pinning Hunter Menendez at 2:56 at 125 pounds to make it 37-3. Bosch is now 17-10 on the year. Freshman Shane Novak finished the match strong for MSUM with a 20-4 technical fall win over Jordan Eckholm to make the final score 42-3. It was the most points MSUM has scored in a double this season.
The Dragons will now turn their attention to the Super Regional 3 tournament, which will be held in Edmond, Okla., on Feb. 28-March 1.
“It is good momentum for us going into the regional tournament,” Nelson said.
