Maxime Estève erupts after Montpellier loss: “We could have gone on six and half hours without scoring”

Montpellier lost away at relegation-battling rivals Strasbourg (2-0) on Sunday for Ligue 1 gameweek 22. The fifteenth-placed Hérault side conceded on the very first action of the game when an unmarked Habib Diallo hammered home on the fourteenth second, in what was this Ligue 1 season’s second fastest goal. The Alsatians were a man down after Jean-Eudes Aholou was sent off following a clumsy challenge at the half-hour mark. But even the advantage in numbers did not prompt the visitors to react. Even worse, Strasbourg doubled their lead just before half-time as Diallo bagged his brace.

The Romain Pitau-led side failed to step out of lethargy in the second half and slumped to a fourth defeat in five games. Montpellier have only a two-point lead over the 4-team relegation zone. This afternoon, they failed to register a single shot on target despite eleven attempts. Montpellier youth product Maxime Estève (20) was apoplectic when speaking to Amazon Prime Video Sport. “We were zero and we have been zero for some time now. I’m not surprised anymore, we can’t even get opportunities to score. We could have gone on six and a half hours without scoring. We need to pull our fingers out of our *****. Getting ourselves in trouble every week-end, that’s pissing me off. What can we do ? I don’t even know. We played with one more player than them and nothing worked. We don’t do the right things and we got what we deserved.“
