Le Parisien and RMC Sport report that the LFP are in advanced negotiations with the French government about a €162m loan to compensate for the amount of TV rights money Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 clubs will lose from the cancellation of Canal Plus’ contract, an action the broadcaster decided to take when the LFP decided not to complete the 2019/20 campaign on Thursday.
As a result, the LFP had to accept that none of its member clubs would be seeing the amount still to be paid out in the Canal + contract had the 2019/20 campaign been completed.
Didier Quillot announced that this scheme was in the works during the LFP Board of Directors meeting on Thursday – an additional meeting will be held on Monday to discuss how to partition this money amongst the clubs, with the French government expected to provide the LFP the full €162m that Canal + was set to provide before the cancellation of the league.
The LFP are still waiting to hear from BeIN Sports about whether or not they will cancel their broadcasting contract following the failure to conclude the 2019/20 season in its totality, with them still owing the LFP around €110m for the remainder of the season’s rights, should they decide not to cancel their contract like Canal + have done.
