PSG hesitating over the future of Edinson Cavani

The PSG hierarchy are hesitating over the future of Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani, according to RMC.

El Matador’s current deal expires in 2020, but Cavani has the intention of staying for at least another season – his 3rd child is about to born, his first to be born in Paris and he is happy with his private life in the French capital.

From the club’s side, they are less definitive, with a source close to PSG saying:

“It is difficult to give a clear answer at the moment. Today, the problem is, if you sell Cavani, you don’t have many other attacking options. And we have seen, at the end of this season, that with a few injuries, that can quickly become a problem. To buy a player at Cavani’s level will cost the club more money than an eventual sale of the attacker will bring.”

The board is split on this big decision – many believe that the MCN experiment has not worked, with Neymar and Mbappé’s clear chemistry between each other not replicated by either with the Uruguayan. Others believe that now is the time for Mbappé to take the centre-forward role on himself. The French international has enjoyed a couple of months in this role since Cavani’s most recent injury, and has in the main performed brilliantly there, apart from in the 2nd leg of PSG’s Champions’ League encounter with Manchester United.

Cavani’s entourage has meanwhile not been spoken to directly by someone at PSG about a possible sale of the player. PSG President Nasser Al Khelaifi, who is personally close to the striker, has always been opposed to the idea of his departure, but he will listen to the desires of manager Thomas Tuchel for next season.

Edinson Cavani is not opposed to the idea of signing an extension past 2020, on the condition that he will be able to continue to feel like an integral part of the Paris project.

PSG Sporting Director Antero Henrique has for the moment not held any discussions over a potential new deal with El Matador.
