World XV head coach Steve Hansen has named a strong matchday squad for Sunday’s Killik Cup encounter against the Barbarians with former Wallabies full-back Israel Folau set to start on the right wing.
The 34-year-old, who currently plays his club rugby in Japan, is part of an exciting back three alongside former All Black Charles Piutau and Springbok flyer Sbu Nkosi, who will start at full-back and on the left wing, respectively.
Folau and Piutau are now playing their Test rugby for Tonga and became eligible for selection under recent World Rugby regulations, which allow internationals to switch after three years of inactivity.
Meanwhile, Hansen has picked Semi Radradra and Ngani Laumape as his midfield combination, with Adam Hastings and Nick Phipps as the starting halfbacks.
Michele Lamaro named as captain
In the forwards, Italy international Michele Lamaro will captain the World XV, and he starts on the openside flank alongside Azzurri team-mate Sebastian Negri and Fiji’s Viliame Mata, who start on the blindside and at number eight, respectively.
Meanwhile, Harry Hockings and Api Ratuniyarawa get the nod in the second-row, while, upfront, Fraser Brown (hooker) packs down alongside Oli Kebble and Wyn Jones, who are the starting props.
