SDSU wrestling sets sights on the big time

BROOKINGS – The South Dakota State wrestling team sees no reason to call itself “mid-major”.

While competing for national championships at the Division I level might be unrealistic for most of SDSU’s teams (outside of football, which competes at the Football Championship Subdivision), wrestling sees this year’s move into the Big 12 conference as a possible stepping stone towards big things.

The Jackrabbits have shown quick and exponential improvement under coach Chris Bono, now in his fourth year at SDSU, and for the first time in the program’s history, they’re receiving votes in the NCAA Top 25 poll. On Saturday SDSU will host Virginia Tech at Frost Arena – the Hokies are the 6th-ranked team in the country. Next Friday they’ll host No. 4 Oklahoma State, a new conference foe, and on Dec. 3 they visit No. 2 Iowa. The Jacks are 1-2 in duals thus far, and the losses came to No. 19 Minnesota and No. 20 Virginia. Continue reading at argusleader.com
