NBC's 'Young Rock' debut exceeds five million viewers

Young Rock — the premiereĀ of the new NBC series based on the life of Dwyane “The Rock” Johnson and his family — did 5.034 million viewers in the overnight ratings.

Tuesday’s kickoff garnered the third-highest audience for network TV on the night behind CBS’ NCIS (5.6 million) and NBC’s This Is Us (5.5 million).

In the demos, Young Rock did a 0.4 in 18-34, 0.9 in 18-49 and 1.4 in 24-34, all second behind This Is Us.

The show featured Johnson in 2032 as he is preparing to run for U.S. president, reflecting on his upbringing through three different periods of his life: 1982 when he was 10, 1987 when he was 15, and 1992 when he was 20 and starting his football career at the University of Miami.

The debut featured actors playing Rocky Johnson, Ata, Andre The Giant, The Wild Samoans, Junkyard Dog and the Iron Shiek during the 1982 time period in Hawaii.

Next week’s show will focus on the 1987 time period.
