As confirmed by the club, Montpellier have signed Tunisian striker Wahbi Khazri from relegated Saint-Étienne.
The 31-year-old forward was available on a free transfer after the end of his contract with Les Verts and will wear the number 99 shirt for MHSC. The player had turned down a lucrative offer from a Saudi Arabian club already this summer with OGC Nice, Lille and Marseille all also interested.
A proven goalscorer in Ligue 1 throughout his career after stints with Bastia, Bordeaux, Rennes and Saint-Étienne previously, Khazri had fallen out of favour at ASSE under coach Claude Puel at the start of the season before being rejuvenated by the arrival of Pascal Dupraz, scoring the goal of the season from very long range against Metz – one of his ten goals in Ligue 1 this term.
In 237 games in the French top flight, Khazri has scored 69 times while adding 37 assists, although it’s only recently that he has become a central striker, often playing off the wings or as an attacking midfielder for Bordeaux and Bastia earlier in his career.
A long-time talisman for the Tunisian national side, Khazri has contributed 24 goals in 69 caps for his country so far in his career.
