The #5 St. Cloud State University wrestling team enjoyed a successful trip to the 2014 Minnesota State, Moorhead Dragon Open on Sunday, Dec. 7, in Moorhead, Minn. In the Red Division, the Huskies captured seven weight brack titles and SCSU affiliated wrestlers also dominated the action the Open’s White Division brackets. Of note, no team scores were kept at the 2014 Dragon Open.
In the Red Division, Joel Salomon scored a first place finish for the Huskies at 125-pounds that included wins over Tirso Lara of North Dakota State, Shane Novak of MSU-Moorhead and Richy Soto of Concordia-Moorhead.
At 133-pounds, Jarred Oftedahl placed second after losing a close 3-2 decision to Blake Bosch of Moorhead in the title bout. At 149-pounds, Josh Howk claimed top honors at the Open, while teammate Taner Trembley placed second. In the title match, Howk charted a 4-0 win over Trembley to win first place.
At 157-pounds, #2 Clint Poster improved to 11-0 on the season with his third consecutive open title of the 2014-15 season. In the championship match, Poster scored an 18-3 major decision over NDSU’s Grant Nehring. At 165-pounds, SCSU’s Josh Berg scored top honors in the bracket. Teammate Gabe Fogarty placed third in the 165-pound bracket and Alex Anaya placed sixth in the tournament for the Huskies.
At 174-pounds, SCSU’s Clayton Jennissen won the title with a 3-0 record for the Huskies. Teammate Garrett Miller added a second place finish at 174-pounds for the Huskies. At 184-pounds, SCSU’s Ben McPhail and Uthman Rabiu ended in a tie for first place honors while Cody Linseen placed third in the 197-pound bracket for the Huskies.
The Red Division was completed by SCSU’s Austin Goergen, who scored a first place finish at 285-pounds. Goergen won the top spot with a 12-5 decision against Donny Longendyke. SCSU’s Caleb White also placed fifth in the 285-pound bracket with a 2:45 fall against Travis Smith of U-Mary.
A total of five unattached wrestlers from SCSU gained first place finishes in the White Division brackets at the Dragon Open along with SCSU’s Travis Holt, who won first place honors in the White Division at 157-pounds.
The Huskies will continue their 2014-15 season on Wednesday, Dec. 10 with a 7 p.m. dual match against Concordia-Moorhead at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud. Tickets for this match can be purchased.
